1. The world's top skiers
The Audi FIS World Ski Championships 2023 will come to an end in Andorra, the epicentre of world skiing. The 25 best skiers in each category of the World Cup will compete for the trophy in each discipline: slalom, giant slalom, supergiant and downhill, in both men's and women's categories. In the field of skiing, these are the most important events after the Olympic Games and the World Championships.

The experience accumulated by the country on previous occasions, including the World Cup Finals in 2019 and the European Cup Finals in 2018, make Andorra a safe bet for the Grandvalira event to be a complete success.

2. The World Cup layouts
The Soldeu and El Tarter sectors will be the setting for the trials, which will be concentrated on the mythical and renowned Avet and Àliga slopes. The first of these, with guaranteed snow quality thanks to its northeast orientation, is the emblematic Soldeu piste, which is more than 1,200 metres long and has a maximum gradient of 65%.

Avet will host the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom, the most technical events: one with a 210-metre slope and the second with a 416-metre slope. The end of the track takes place on a 14,000 square metre footbridge, built for the first World Cup Finals to be held in 2019, which connects it to the village of Soldeu.

For its part, the Àliga slope, located in El Tarter, is known for its double route, which from a bird's eye view or from the Euroski Mountain Resort Hotel 4* forms the 'X' that symbolises the Grandvalira logo. With a length of 2.7 kilometres and a gradient of more than 700 metres where runners can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h, it will be the stage where the speed trials will take place.

On the other hand, the Soldeu platform and L'Abarset, just a few minutes' walk from the Euroski Mountain Resort Hotel 4*, will be the centre of all the entertainment activities surrounding the event, with Après Ski parties every day and, as a great novelty, the World Cup Village, which will include children's activities, gastronomy and all kinds of proposals.

It should be noted that Grandvalira, which manages the two main sectors for the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals Andorra 2023, received the "Llum Verda" seal last summer from FEDA, the Principality's energy supplier. This seal certifies that the energy consumed is of renewable origin and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 50%.

3. The programme
The event will be held from 13 to 19 March, and on the first few days the action will focus on the Àliga slope (El Tarter), leaving the Avet slope (Soldeu) for the more technical events. On the first day, however, the main focus will be on Soldeu, where the opening ceremony will take place at 19:30.

As I explained, the fast track of El Tarter will be the venue for the downhill and supergiant training sessions on 13 and 14 March. The two following days, 15 and 16 March, will be the days on which these events will be held. On 17 March, the Mixed Team Parallel will be held at the same venue in the morning, while in the afternoon the public bib draw will take place at L'Arbaset.

On the last two days, the action will move to Avet, where the slalom and giant slalom events will be held. In addition, the World Cup Village will be open during these two days. The icing on the cake, the last big event, will be held in Soldeu at 13:00: the prize-giving ceremony.

4. Target: 2029 World Championships
The Principality of Andorra is more confident than ever about hosting the World Cup Finals, but the country has a bigger goal on the horizon: the 2029 World Championships.

With the experience gained at the European Cup Finals in 2018, the World Cup Finals in 2019 and now in 2023, from 19 March the focus will be on May 2024, when the International Ski Federation will choose the venue for the 2029 World Championships. At the moment, the rival venues are Narvik (Norway) and Val Gardena (Italy), so fingers crossed!
